“Not until we experience it, is it more than just words. After we experience it, there is no need for words.” Milton Trager

Trager Psychophysical Integration® offers a pleasurable, gentle, and effective approach to movement education and mind/body integration. Its techniques help release deep-seated physical and mental patterns and facilitate profound relaxation, increased physical mobility, and mental clarity. The benefits of a Trager session are cumulative, with subsequent sessions allowing for deeper and longer-lasting changes.

There are two ways in which to experience The Trager Approach:

  • Receiving hands-on table work in private sessions, or

  • Receiving private or group instruction in the active movement work called Mentastics®.

Trager Benefits A Wide Range of Individuals

Individuals seek a Trager practitioner for a myriad of reasons: to achieve renewal through relaxation, to stimulate personal growth, or to experience greater feelings of wellness and joy.

The Trager Approach is also known to ease or manage a wide range of conditions: back and neck pain; stress; everyday aches and pains; limited movement; depression; and grief.

What to Expect in a Private Trager Session

At the beginning of each session, the practitioner enters into a state of awareness that founder Dr. Milton Trager termed "hook up." It is calm, meditative space similar to meditation. The practitioner uses touch and movement to communicate to the client’s body and mind the feeling of a freer and easier way of being and moving.

The client lies on a well-padded table in a safe, comfortable environment while being supported and gently moved within a pain-free range and natural rhythm. The client can choose to be fully clothed, or partially clothed and appropriately draped.

The quality of touch and movement is such that one experiences the feeling of moving effortlessly and freely on one’s own. As body and mind receive these soft movements, tensions disappear and new movements become possible.

What to Expect in Trager Mentastics®

The second offering of the Trager Approach is Mentastics, which is instruction in the use of self-care movements.

Mentastics is taught both in private sessions and in group classes.

Dr. Trager developed these simple, effortless movements to encourage playful exploration of "what could be freer" for the body. Integrating Mentastics into daily life enables the student to recall feelings of ease, freedom, flexibility, and joy.

Milton Trager, Founder of the Trager Psychophysical Integration

The Trager Approach was developed by Milton Trager, M.D. who left his medical practice to teach his work the last 20 years of his life to a growing number of holistically minded practitioners.

Dr. Trager entered medical school in Mexico when he was 42 because he originally wanted to teach his work in the medical community. He recognized the value of working through the body in this kind, gentle way to create greater well being and enhancing the response and intimate relationship between body and mind.

Overcoming a weak, sickly childhood he intuitively accessed a method of working first encouraged by his boxing trainer when he was 18 years old. He then began an exploration that continued throughout his life applying his approach with everyone open to experiencing it and with all types of issues - asthma, multiple sclerosis, polio, painful backs.

He is co-author of the book Trager Mantastics with Cathy Guadagno. There is a biography of his life entitled Moving Medicine by Jack Liskin.
